PIRI Scientific Committees
PIRI hosts three specialized Scientific Committees driving impactful research across key African priorities.
Below is an overview of their mandates, objectives, and roles:
Scientific Committee on Research Ethics and Integrity
Focus: Upholding ethical standards and integrity in research.
- Accountability: Reports directly to PIRI’s Director of Programs, maintaining transparent records of reviews and investigations.
- Mandate: Ensure scientific conduct aligns with global norms and African contexts.
- Key Objectives:
- Develop and review ethics policies for research integrity.
- Provide training on ethical research practices, data management, and informed consent.
- Conduct ethical reviews of research proposals and investigate misconduct complaints.
- Promote awareness through workshops and collaborate with international ethics bodies.
- Structure: Multidisciplinary experts (scientists, ethicists, legal professionals) led by an elected Coordinator, supported by the secretariat.
Scientific Committee on Environment and Energy Transition
Focus: Advancing sustainability and low-carbon solutions in Africa.
- Mandate: Drive research, innovation, and collaboration in environment and energy transition.
- Key Objectives:
- Prioritize research areas aligned with the SDGs and African Union’s Agenda 2063.
- Facilitate partnerships between academia, policymakers, and international organizations.
- Offer evidence-based policy advice and support capacity building through workshops/conferences.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Set research agendas, evaluate proposals for funding, and foster technology transfer.
- Build regional/international networks to enhance scientific cooperation.
- Composition: Renowned experts in environment and energy transition, coordinated by a leading scientist.
- Reporting: Submits annual reports to the PIRI Director of Programs, highlighting project impacts and policy recommendations.
Scientific Committee on Peace, Security, and Governance
Focus: Strengthening inclusive and sustainable societies through evidence-based solutions.
- Mandate: Address African challenges in peacebuilding, security, and good governance.
- Key Objectives:
- Conduct high-impact research on conflict resolution, governance, and sustainable development.
- Connect researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to share knowledge and best practices.
- Provide policy guidance to governments and international bodies for inclusive solutions.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Define research priorities and promote interdisciplinary collaborations.
- Review proposals, ensure research quality, and disseminate findings through publications/conferences.
- Monitor research impact and advocate for evidence-based policies.
- Composition: Eminent scholars and practitioners with expertise in peace studies, gender-diverse and globally engaged.
- Reporting: Submits annual reports to the PIRI’s Director of Programs.
